The RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course is an essential course for those who wish to drive powerboats up to 10m. The course takes place over 2 days and focuses on low-speed close-quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed and collision regulations. It requires no previous sailing experience and is taken onboard our Novurania 650 which has a 220 HP Inboard Diesel Engine. This course is also popular with Super Yacht Deckhands and crew from the Commercial Maritime Sector

Pre-Course Requirements

As this course is designed for beginners, there are no pre-course requirements before starting this course other than a minimum age of 12 years old.

We do, however, recommend that you read the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Handbook in order to familiarise yourself with the vocabulary used in yachting 

Course Syllabus

You will learn how to take charge of the vessel safely and most importantly you understand the importance of good pre-planning. By the end of the course you should have the following knowledge;

  • Launching and recovery

  • Safety equipment

  • Lines and fenders

  • Fuel tanks

  • Effects of current or tide

  • Planing and low speed manoeuvring

  • Propeller controls

  • Securing to a buoy

  • Anchoring

  • Leaving and coming alongside

  • Man overboard

  • Types of craft and engine

  • Maintenance checks

  • IRPCS

  • Weather forecasts

  • Emergency action

What to Bring

  • Sun Protection 

  • Sun Glasses 

  • Boat Friendly Shoes

  • Passport 

  • Lightweight Jumper or Jacket 

  • Anti Sea Sickness Tablets - especially if not an experienced sailor.

  • 1x Passport sized photo

Post Course

After the course, you should be a self-sufficient power-boater on open planning craft up to 10m in the right conditions, aware of your own limitations and those of the craft.  You will also receive your RYA Powerboat Level 2 License. At the end of a successful course, you may also be eligible for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC).
