This two-day entry-level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat up to 10 metres in length.

Novurania 650 with a 220 HP inboard Diesel Engine. .

Pre Course Requirements

There are no pre-course requirements for this course as it is designed for beginners wishing to progress to Powerboat Level 2 often necessary to work within the superyacht industry. The minimum age for this course is 12 years. 

​

Our advice is to pick up the RYA Powerboat Handbook and have a stress free read through so you are familiar with some of the vocabulary used on yachts.  (Included in course price)

 

Pre Course Requirements

What to Bring

Sailors are exposed to the elements and must always be prepared for 4 seasons. Due to limited storage on board, we always recommend you bring lightweight clothing to suit all possible weather scenarios. Key things to bring include;

  • Sun Protection 

  • Sun Glasses 

  • Boat Friendly Shoes

  • Passport 

  • Shorts & T-shirts 

  • Light Trousers 

  • Lightweight Jumper or Jacket 

  • Anti Sea Sickness Tablets - especially if not an experienced sailor.

  • 1x Passport sized photo

Course Syllabus

You will learn how to take charge of the vessel safely and most importantly you understand the importance of good pre-planning. By the end of the course you should have the following knowledge;

  • Safety equipment

  • Lines and fenders

  • Fuel tanks

  • Effects of current or tide

  • Planing and low speed manoeuvring

  • Propeller controls

  • Securing to a buoy

  • Anchoring

  • Leaving and coming alongside

  • Man overboard

  • Types of craft and engine

  • Maintenance checks

  • IRPCS

  • Weather forecasts

  • Emergency action

Post Course

After the course, you should be a self-sufficient power-boater on open planning craft up to 10m in the right conditions, aware of your own limitations and those of the craft. At the end of a successful course, you may also be eligible for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC).
