The 1 day RYA First Aid At Sea Course is a requirement for many seafarers including commercial skippers, bareboat skippers, and regatta crews.

Pre Course Requirements

There are no pre-course requirements for this course as it is designed for beginners looking to better their knowledge. Whether you choose to study with us in the classroom or online, on completion you will have key skills that will aid in your next sailing adventure!

Our advice is to pick up the RYA Day Skipper Handbook and have a stress free read through so you are familiar with some of the vocabulary used on yachts.


 

Pre Course Requirements

What to Bring

Sailors are exposed to the elements and must always be prepared for 4 seasons. Due to limited storage on board, we always recommend you bring lightweight clothing to suit all possible weather scenarios. Key things to bring include;

  • Sun Protection 

  • Sun Glasses 

  • Boat Friendly Shoes

  • Passport 

  • Shorts & T-shirts 

  • Light Trousers 

  • Bathing Equipment 

  • Lightweight Jumper or Jacket 

  • Personal Care Equipment (Shampoo, Deodorant, prescription Medicines)

  • Anti Sea Sickness Tablets - especially if not an experienced sailor.

Course Syllabus

The RYA Coastal Skipper course is a 5-day course (9 days if both Practical & Theory) that starts at 0930 and finishes at variable times depending on the day.

 

The Course Syllabus includes:

  • Pilotage

  • Passage making & ability as skipper

  • Emergency Situations

  • Adverse weather conditions

  • Yacht handling under power

  • Yacht handling under sail

  • Passage making

  • Night cruising

Post Course

After being awarded your Day Skipper Theory Certificate, with some more sailing miles under your belt you will be ready to take on the RYA Day Skipper Practical! As a Day Skipper, you will have the knowledge and skills to skipper a yacht in familiar waters during the day.
